We wanted a lawn service a few years back so I went to some really nice sub-divisions on a sat. and drove around and spotted some really nice looking lawns. Some people were home being on a sat. and outside working in garage or in gardens and I just stopped and asked. It was worth it because one name kept coming up we got a great service and are very satisfied.

I observed a few in the neighborhood doing lawns for others. When I felt they did a good job I approached them and asked for estimates. Last year I hired two college guys with their own equipment eetc. They did a great job, were very careful, did a good job of cutting and trimming and CLEANING UP. They were also the best priced.
There is a rather old saying..."OBSERVATION IS THE BEST EDUCATION". It still works.

Referral by friends is best otherwise, you could end up with flyby nights that cut when they feel like it and still charge you the montly rate.
What I normally do to people like that is throw roofing tack nails when they are suppose to arrive on the front street parking section of my house.

The company I use, knocked on my door and ask for my business. measured my yard and gave me a bid. sounded good to me, I said go ahead.

I would rather do business with some one who was looking for new business, than me having to contact them.
