This happens almost every night for me. We all have different sleep patterns. What helps me the most is counting backwards from 99. If this doesn't work I try -- 99 49 98 48 97 47 etc. What you are trying to do is take your mind off whatever is keeping you awake. I only do this sequence two times. If I haven't fallen asleep I get up and have something warm to drink. When I feel the least bit sleepy I try bed again. (It's about midnight now so pretty soon I'll try going to bed)

If you have a lavender candle, incense, or air freshener--use it now.

Take a warm bath, and drink either Chamomile Tea or warm milk.

If you meditate, now would be the time to do so--to clear your mind.

Tomorrow, get some Melatonin (a sleep supplement, in the vitamin aisle of most all stores). This helps people sleep--including those with jet lag, and those who work rotating shifts.

For me, it is easier to fall asleep with the TV on, or at least a radio.

Do you have a hard time falling asleep because your mind is racing about stressfull things or you just plain can't go to sleep?? You could have insomnia. I work the night shift and have a hard time falling asleep sometimes. I like to curl up with a warm blanket and put on my nature sounds to fall asleep. It works really well.

Lay down and listen to really relaxing music. Close your eyes and just gradually stop thinking about things. You have to make sure your whole entire body is relaxed or you won't be able to fall asleep.

I have the same problem. I get on here and just can't get off. It is very good for keeping me up at night.
try rubbing lavender oil on your forehead, be careful not to get any in your eyes. I will put a little under my nose. I also put some on my pillow. It is so good for relaxing you and putting you to sleep.

Try reading the dictionary. My mum got me to do this when I couldn't sleep, and I never made it past "addition".
