you need to see a doctor so you can have a check up and make sure everything is well with you and the baby. it is important to stay in close contact with your phisician from the start. he will also talk to you about diet/ lifestyle changes and will arrange for future checkups. he can also answer any of you questions or concerns.

Go out and buy the book What to Expect When Your Expecting. It will tell you most of what you need to know.. There is a diet in there called the best odds diet. It is a healthy way to eat and a sure way to get all of the calories you need in one day. There is also exercises in it that you can do safely with no harm to the baby. Congratulations on the Great News, and Best of Luck in the coming months they are exciting times.....

Where do you go from here?

To see a doctor or midwife you will be able to assess your situation and give you all the relevant information you need.

What should you be avoiding? To be honest, relying on getting such important information from a group of strangers - honest, some of the answers I have seen on here are downright scary.

There are also plenty of pregancy websites online that will be able to give you lot sof advice, or you could visit your local library or bookstore and pick up a copy of a book like "What to Expect When You're Expecting" that will give you lots of helpful advice.

There's a lot you need to know - too much to fit into a yahoo answer!

Congratulations!

First, CONGRATULATIONS!

You need to load up on Folic Acid - about 1200mcg every single day! Its the only way to prevent neural tube defects like Spina Bifida. Get a good prenatal vitamin for calcium and iron (remember, you're making a whole PERSON now) eat LOADS of vegetables for good fiber and nutrition.

Be cautious of foods that contain high levels of mercury like large fish (tuna, mackrel) and watch your caffein intake. No more than 2 cups of coffe per day or 1 cup and 2 sodas.

Limit your refined sugars to aviod gestational diabetes - anything baked, white bread, regular sodas, candy... go for whole grain breads and cereals, vegetable juice (or a veggie/fruit blend) and whole fruits.

And yes! GO TO YOUR DOCTOR!!

Ok this is A LOT of info..but please read it all closely and try and follow it. If not for you, then for your unborn child.

As for foods you should avoid, try to avoid
*RAW MEATS..like raw fish or undercooked red meat or poultry. They can give you salmonella or toxoplasmosis.

*You should also avoid DELI MEATS. They have been known to be contaminated with Listeria, which can cause miscarriage. If you decide to eat some, make sure that you reheat the meat until it is steaming.

*Also avoid FISH WITH MERCURY like shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. If you want to eat canned tuna, it's ok if you eat small amounts of it.

*Avoid SMOKED FISH like lox, nova style, kippered, or jerky. They can also be contaminated with Listeria just like deli meat.

*And lastly, try and avoid FISH THAT MAY HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED WITH POLLUTANTS like, blue fish, striped bass, salmon, pike, trout, and walleye.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
As for foods you should eat.
*Choose WHOLE GRAIN carbohydrates that are a good source of fiber.

*Take your PRENATAL VITAMINS daily.

*Choose at least one good source of FOLIC ACID. Foods rich in folic acid include green leafy vegetables, fruits (orange juice, strawberries), and fortified cereals.

*Drink or eat four servings of dairy products or foods rich in CALCIUM.

*Eat at least three servings of IRON-RICH FOODS. You should get 18 milligrams of iron in your diet daily. Good sources include enriched grain products, lean meat, poultry and fish, eggs, and green leafy vegetables.

*Choose at least one good source of VITAMIN A every other day. Foods rich in Vitamin A often have a yellow or orange color to them. They include carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, and cantaloupe.

**ALSO, avoid alcohol, limit caffeine intake drastically, avoid saccharine or aspertame because they are known to cause birth defects, and finally eat salty foods in moderation because too much can raise your blood pressure. DO NOT DIET DURING PREGNANCY!

I recommend also, getting a Pregnancy book like What to Expect When You're Expecting or Your Pregnancy, Week by Week.
I wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy! Congratulations!
