I've owned a garage door co for years and can tell you that the only way I've seen homeowners override the sensors is by mounting them on the motor head pointed at each other. The circuit boards on all units will not allow you to by pass the sensors. Only boards on Genies in '93 had that feature. The only time the sensors are a problem is if they are mounted incorrectly or if there's a staple in the wires or if they are pulled too tightly and crimped around a corner. We install hundreds of operators annually without problems. If you keep the eyes clear of spider webs, don't block them with crap and take your time installing the wires, you will benefit greatly from the extra safety they provide. Good luck.

He should replace the broken one - safety comes first - you dont want a small kid or a pet trapped under the door if it is accidentaly closed
