I have 5 pythons. I used to have a 13 ft python. you need to strongly block any loose openings and KEEP YOUR CATS INSIDE. A 5 FOOT PYTHON IS SMALL BUT CAN STILL EASILY EAT CATS! pythons are escape artists so they can get in and out very easily thanks to strength. if you want to help capture the snake so your worries are over. tell the owner to buy a live rabbit, put it in a wire cage that can let the smell of the rabbit out. put the cage and rabbit in your backyard and wait. the snake should eventually come for food. but since it can't get to it(rabbit cage) the rabbit might just scream in fright and the snake will try to figure out how to get it. when this happens call the owner. problem solved!

A five-foot long python is NOT a very large snake, and nowhere nearly large enough to eat a cat! Most native American constrictor snake species, like Ratsnakes, Bullsnakes and even Corn Snakes can reach lengths of over five feet easily, and they certainly don't eat cats. A rat would be a really hefty meal for a five-ft.-long snake. The cats would most likely pose far more of a threat to the snake than the other way around, especially if the weather is the least bit cool, since that would slow down the snake's reactions, while the warm-blooded cats would not be affected. Cats are highly-efficient killers of snakes and pretty much any other animal smaller than themselves. If the snake is a Ball Python, it probably would not even defend itself by biting, like a young Retic or Burmese python would, so it would be even more vulnerable to a cat attack. Pythons are tropical snakes, not adapted at all to cold weather, and unlike temperate snakes, they don't hibernate. Temps below 50 degrees will make short work of a python, if the cats or neighborhood dogs don't get to it first. I keep both snakes(which has including some really big pythons)and cats, so I can speak from considerable experience with both.
My cats, by the way, are not allowed outside at all, both for their own safety(we don't have cat-eating snakes, but we do have owls, coyotes, stray dogs, bobcats and automobiles, which will all take their toll on cats), and for that of native wild birds and other small animals, which cats relentlessly slaughter for the pure fun of killing things.

Alright, look people. A 5 foot python is NOT big at all... Certainly not big enough to eat a cat. Kittens maybe, but not fullgrown cats. Odds are the snake wouldn't figure out how to use the doggie door, but if you're worried, bring the cats inside and duct tape the door shut. Where do you live that it's warm enough for the snake to be outside right now? If it's chilly/cold out, there is a better chance of the snake seeking your house out for warmth. If it's pretty warm, my guess is it'll stay outside. Basically, just keep an eye out for it. A 5 foot python is harmless, to you AND your cats.

depending on where you live you don't have a lot to be worried about. In most places it is too cold for a python to survive being outside for any length of time and if it is outside it is going to be extremely lethargic from the cold. Unless your temps are over 60 for a good portion of the day you and your cats are safe, and unless you have a house full of tasty mice or rats the snake is more than likely not going to see your pet door as a good place to hide.
A 5 foot python is NOT big enough to eat cats, and unless it has been conditioned to that will not see a cat a prey(food) a new born kitten would barely be small enough for a meal.

Seal up any openings to your house first story window level and below. Get a kitty litter box and keep the cats inside. If the thing is loose it will roam around and won't just stay in your yard. If your neighbor hasn't caught it within a week start living your life normally again. Domesticated pets normally can't survive on their own. A snake that big should be spotted easily if he is still in the neighborhood.

Yes, keep the cats inside the house in an area where they are allowed to move around/escape if the python does happen to come in.
You don't wanna put cats in a cage where the python can just slip and and the cat has no where to go.

Yes, it's very likely they'll get eaten if they go outside, I don't know if the snake will come inside the house though. Tell your neighbor to get his happy a s s over and catch his snake or you're going to call animal control. Then call them anyway.

if you want no harm done to your cats, keep them inside. block your doggie door... like, really block it. i cant imagine if a snake came into my house..wow... anyways, a 5 foot python, not very believable, but if by some slim chance you are telling the truth, yeah .... duct tape that door, and block it with something really heavy. and make sure ur windows are all down. if ur neighbor doesn't find his snake soon, call the animal control people.
