Personification: giving human qualities to animals or objects.

Example:
a smiling moon, a jovial sun

In "Mirror" by Sylvia Plath, for example, the mirror--the "I" in the first line--is given the ability to speak, see and swallow, as well as human attributes such as truthfulness.

I am silver and exact.
I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful--

Therefore....

The apartment building = old and tired, weary of age, stood upright with pride as though it were showing off... etc.

ballpoint pen = skated along gleefully, danced along the page, etc.

old chair = just sat there as though it were bored, creaked as though it were telling its history, etc.

gasoline pump = gave the car gas as it was told to, tried to give every last drop of its tank, unwillingly obliged, etc.

Good luck with whatever the heck you are doing!
