Living in the Tampa area, I would recommend Tampa Bay Area.
1. If your children like looking for things on the beach, go to the beaches in Venice, Fl. Sharks teeth wash up there all the time.
2. Busch Gardens are in Tampa, and it is really nice and fairly inexpensive.
3. Lowery Park Zoo in Tampa is great, one of the highest rated zoos in the country, and a lot of events
4. Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is in Tampa and a great hands on museum for children
5. Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg is fun and beautiful, lots of butterflies.
6. Tarpon Springs, sponge docks area is a fun and quaint touristy area to visit.
7. Just a little south of Tampa is Ellenton, where they have an old railroad museum where you can ride the trains (ride with your children in the caboose, guarantee they will love it).

My mother lives in South Florida the Palm Beach area, I was raised mostly in South Florida, I would say maybe St. Augustine, instead of Tampa, I have not been to either of the two cities, but I heard good things about St. Augustine.

Might want to go to St. Augustine, it's a neat little place, especially for the kids, they have these huge old forts that look like little castles and stuff there, and the coast line basically was turned into a wall, so to get by the water you have to jump down on to the sand. I don't know if there will be tons to do, but overall it was a pleasant place to be in. I live in Bradenton, I've never thought about going to Tampa to do anything other than find a store, or mall, so I wouldn't be able to help in that area.

St. Augustine is nice but the beaches are rocky. Daytona is a meat market. There's Ormond Beach which is a nice family beach and about 1hour from Disney. There's New Smyrna Beach which is another clean nice family beach. These are on the east coast. On the west coast you have Treasure Island which is south of Clearwater and about 40minutes from Busch Gardens which is lots of fun. There's also Captiva and Sanibel Island which is a bit more expensive but the seashells are so worth it. The Keys are an 8hours drive just from the center of the state. The west coast waters are warmer and the fishing is better.

Florida here, all my life, my granny use to take us all over this state.I dunno about today. I liked WeeWah, Tarpon Springs, Blue Springs, Vortex, Devils Hole and Crystal Caverns. Those are Springs in the Panhandle. Lotsa history in Pensacola, pretty beaches and bays also. Tampa rocks. St.Aug is way kewl. They are oldest Permanent Settlement of the Spaniards. Pensacola was the first. It got hit by a cane and they died or didn't come back for 50 years or so, Augustine was built in that time.
Alabama and Georgia are loads of fun. I would like to visit Tampa again, or Ft Pierce.
Have Fun!

Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key in Manatee county are fantastic getaways. Manatee county is about an hour below Tampa. Then there's Sanibel and Captiva Islands near Ft. Myers that offer so much. There's a lot to do -- have fun!
