Actually, it works the other way around. A college can afford to be selective if many people apply to it, but since that makes the college a rare commodity, more people then want it.

Its because most of the selective colleges are prestigious and difficult to get accepted into. If one gets in to a highly selective college, they proved to be exceptional and get to brag I guess.

Because it is usually an image booster and there is the perception that it offers a better education than "non-selective" ones.
