Only works if you close them tightly, not just close them and it has to be totally quiet in the room.

Yeah, it's quiet as hell in here, and I closed my eyes really tight.
I'm not sure what your getting at here.
But one thing I noticed is that I have an almost constant ringing in my ears. Doctors thought it might be a tumor but tests show nothing wrong so every so often my ears will ring randomly. And it's not quiet either, it's like the ringing you get in your ears after being in the Woofer at a Metallica concert.
So that may be why I didn't hear it.

i can't hear it due to the tinitus in my left ear from a crappy candlebox concert in '96.
