Good decision. Australia is such a beautiful land. I'd like to know, what are your interests? There are a thousand things you can do and visit while at the country 'down-under'. You can go diving, snorkeling, go to the outbacks, or participate in their festivals.
Check this website for hot australia tourist spots: http://www.bestaustralianhotels.com/

Right now they're having the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. It's a world-renowned festival of not just gays and lesbians, it's for everybody. If you plan to stay in Sydney, here's a great place to check in: http://www.hotel-apartments.com.au

I think most of it has been well covered above.

You might want to consider where you stay in Sydney as well. I'd recommend three options, The City ( various areas like The Rocks ) , Manly or Bondi - but Bondi is a bit "rushed" and congested.

The Official State Tourism website is fairly extensive and I think pictures will tell a thousand words. Focus on the environment rather than the cultural - something Australia is rich in. Sydney is unusual in that it is probably the richest city in terms of environment in the World ( Harbour, outdoor life , safety , sunshine , beach , forest , parks , )

Here's some suggestions in addition to the other very good ideas and other links people have provided. Check out the hotel photos which can sometimes contain locality shots. All the best with your planning:

Sydney is a wonderful place ... i just came back from Sydney one month ago... if you have enough time, i will suggest you to travel surround Sydney... few places which you cannot miss like hunter valley, Port Stephen, Southern Highland, Blue Mountain(five stars rated) and great pacific drive... if possible, rent a car and venture around Sydney.. If you are not interested with mentioned suburn areas, Sydney itself can last you for week... few places you cannot miss included Bondi beach, Manly, Circular Quay,The Rock and Darling Harbour.. and also Sydney Bridge Climb ... Sydney's transporatation system is quite accessible whereby you can get around by the city train... however, it will be good if you can rent a car and enjoy the nice view along the coast line and highway... i enjoyed my trip very much and hope you will have a good time there...

One of the more interesting things in Sydney is in the Powerhouse Museum and that is the pumping engine built by James Watt. If you visit the P'house Museum, take a flashlight because too many exhibits are kept in dark conditions and it's hard to see them.

Walk across the harbour bridge - fantastic views.

Well there is like everything in Sydney. Just going around the city is fun, like the Queen Victoria Building, and Luna Park, if you like stuff like that. There is the Aquarium and ferries, aswell as just heaps of random attractions.

The blue mountains would definately be good, like the three sisters and Katoomba is always interesting.

Beaches are good, Bondi is well known but over croweded and the waves can be biggish if you just want to paddle around, Maroubra beach is nice.

Centennial Park can be boring but its near Fox studios, there are heaps of brochures around for everything though.

Powerhouse Museum.

Good Luck

Get a train to the Blue Mountains, a ferry to Manly, it is the ferrry ride - not so much the destination.
The ferries go to the zoo as well. the latter is one of the best in the world.
all of the beaches are beautiful.
the harbour is wonderful...
cuisine has developed from all the cultures in Sydney and whatever nationality's food you enjoy you will find.
enjoy your trip!
