It was NOT a "nickname", it was his proper title - Chairman.
Surely you have heard of the 'Chairman of the Board' too.
As for Mao Zedong, you might also see the old spelling of his name Mao Tse-tung too. Chairman Mao, of the Communist Party of the People's Republic of China.

Because that's the name Communists use for a leader. They called people comrades, and their leader Chairman.
