I'm trying to help my girlfriend with an assignment for school and she needs a list of pedestrian-related traffic laws for portland, oregon. If anyone knows of anything helpful, please, do tell. Btw, I already checked the DMV website. nothing helpful.

I've been helping a friend with his written driving test, so just went to the DMV site yesterday. They have the DMV manual online, and there are a lot of statements about pedestrian laws (as the other Yamster answered, they recently changed them this last year). They also have two written sample tests with several pedestrian related questions on the test. Portlands laws aren't any different than the rest of the state.

Here's one question from the site:
As a driver, you must stop for a pedestrian(s) at an intersection:

1. Only if the pedestrian is in a marked (painted) crosswalk.
2. If the pedestrian is in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
3. Only if the pedestrian is on your side of the road.
4. Only if there is a separate walk signal for pedestrians at the intersection.

Here's the link to the manual directly:

If she needs the exact laws, then you want the Oregon Revisted Statutes (ORS) that relate to pedestrians. Here are some links:
The 2005 Legislature passed a couple of bills that modify pedestrian and bicyclist related laws; effective Jan 1, 2006. The revised ORS language is not yet available. Below is a summary of the bills that passed.

SB 591---Modifications to Pedestrian Laws (Chapter 746, 2005 Laws)

Modifies the Oregon Vehicle Code to stipulate the conditions when a driver is considered to have committed the offense of failure to stop and remain stopped. If a pedestrian is proceeding in accordance with a traffic control device or crossing the roadway in a crosswalk and is in any of the following locations, the driver must stop and remain-++ stopped:
 In the lane in which the driver’s vehicle is traveling
 In the lane adjacent to the lane in which the driver’s vehicle is traveling
 In the lane into which the driver’s vehicle is turning
 In the lane adjacent to the lane into which the driver’s vehicle is turning if the driver is making a turn at an intersection that does not have a traffic control device
 Within six feet from the lane into which the driver’s vehicle is turning if the driver is making a turn at an intersection with a traffic control device.
A bicycle lane or the part of a roadway where a vehicle stops, stands or parks that is adjacent to a lane of travel is considered to be part of that adjacent lane of travel. A driver does not need to stop for a pedestrian who is on the far side of a safety island.

Effective Date: January 1, 2006

Just do a search on ORS pedestrian in any browser to find more.

I was in the DMV a cupple of weeks ago and saw a flyer....Our new pedestrian laws went into effect the first of the year. Your having to ask this questions implies what happened over here in Ontario. (Poor media coverage.) I suggest checking with the Portland Police Bereau or walk into the DMV and get the flyer.

Good Luck
