First of all, America is not fighting Iraq, and that is key to understanding the situation. America is fighting a large insurgency of Islamic extremists that want very badly to have control of Iraq, and factions that have all but declared war on each other (sunnis, shiites, kurds). We continue to fight because the Iraqi army and police forces can't keep the country "stable," a word i use very loosely, by themselves.
But you could get hundreds of opinions on why we're still fighting, and what should be done to stop the fighting.
You've got some research to do. Good luck.

I have somewhat of an answer for you, at least I hope I do. This is a very important issue that needs a viable answer.
The link below will take you to an interview that was done a few days ago on CN8 in New Jersey...their AM Morning show. It's with 3 former terrorists who are now practicing tolerance. I don't know if you caught this before, but many people have turned their noses away from the truth because they'd rather listen and adhere to the same old media reports.
One thing I will say is that I'm just sorry that Congress has not seen this, because if they did, it just might scare the pants off of them into action...be it positive or negative.
With my family members being in Iraq, I pray daily, and when I get this type of interview that is honest and exhibiting the true facts of an issue, then I do stand up and take notice.

I hope this helps you. I don't know if or not you can use this in class in lieu of a paper, but at the college I attended, several had ask in advance if they could do a video presentation. Good luck with your paper and I sure hope you get an A+.

Ok the reason we are still there is because our actions have resulted in complete chaos, a civil war and caused a tremendous influx of Al Qaeda that wasn't there before.
It is a matter of honor at this pt. Sure Iraq has an elected government, a military, a police force, a constitution, etc... but we cause the chao so we must stay until they are stabilized.
The problem with Bush is his continued failed methods of stabilizing the situation. I prefer to go with the Democrat's plan that follows the Iraqi Study Group. They believe we need to push the Iraqis into protecting themselves by being more of a police rather than militants.

We are not at war with the Iraqi people but with an enemy that is trying to destroy their hard earned freedom. Iraq is our ally and we need their oil, as does most of the world...Saddam was a cruel and evil tryrant who refused to comply with UN resolutions and weapons inspections and attacted us first. That is why we are at war, and the reason we have an interest in helping get their gov't stable is oil. That oil is vital to us and many countries around the world, whether directly or indirectly.
There are many things that we as civilians can not possibly understand about this war. If we knew, then the enemy would know. If i were you I would want to write my essay on why we should stay. Your topic would be original and you will stand alone.

If you're writing an essay, then you should be writing about something you're familiar with, like others have said.
The answer to your question is basically that we aren't fighting against Iraq and haven't been for a long time. Our people are helping their civilian-type people be safe from attacks from terrorist-type people. That kind of security is needed to ensure that the public is safe and that there won't be someone else to do the same stuff Saddam did to them. With some of our help, they're also building all the infrastructure that a country needs to survive and be self-sufficient some time soon.

We are still in Iraq because terrorists are still in Iraq, and are blowing the crap out of Iraqis every single day. We are a lot better equiped to fight them than the Iraqis are right now, and it is our responsibility to fight them because we are one of the reasons they are in Iraq. If we left Iraq, the terrorists would not just go away. They would probably start a civil war and eventualy one side would commit genocide against the other. You may be say to yourself "that's not our problem", but I beg you to consider the halocost and especially the genocide in Rawanda.
So there's two good reasons. Killing terrorists and preventing a genocide. You are right in saying that we should end the war, but you should be more clear and say that we should WIN the war, since running away will not help anyone.

The funniest thing about this war now is that there was no reason for us to really be in Iraq. We were only supposed to be in Afghanistan but some how we floated over to somewhere else. If you ask me, the whole war was started over false facts, and the thing that makes me angry is that so many innocent human lives are being taken for reason. We are actually do much more harm then help now. I pray for peace everyday because it is greatly needed. I think that this whole thing should have been over and it probably would have if our leaders didn't have hidden agendas. We as Americans have to stand up and demand the truth because until we tell them that we refused to be lied to anymore they will just keep on feeding us all of the media hype. Do your own research and become more aware of the real dry cut politics. It might just surprise you.

It is really quite complicated, however, the basic reason is power and money. OIL!!!!!
There is another good reason why we went to war in Iraq. That is to remove Hussein. He wanted to trade oil money in Euros which would have weakened the U S. Dollar....which isn't worth too much right now. The United States would tumble economically if that were to have happened.
The Arabs and Israel are another reason. Start reading about Zionism and what it is and how it is creating genocide on the Palestinians. The Zionist aren't the good guys.
REF: Ted Pike, "Israel, who's land is it"
I am a Viet Nam veteran, they told us we were fighting communism. Now we do business with them, China, Viet Nam are examples. Governments lie!
The Sunnis and the Shiites are religious secs fighting over power and money. Who is the heir to Mohammad the prophet.

The only one you will persuade with your essay is a room full of helmet wearers.
We are not fighting Iraq. Iraq has an elected government we are allies with. We are fighting terrorists.
Much like fighting Pelosi in Congress.
