I'm an animation student but I hope to do some work in illustrating or writing books for youngsters as well probably 8 years and younger. What kind of books do your kids or kids you know like? Do they prefer human characters or animals or anthropoamophic ones?
Thanks in advance

It would be wise if you took a Children's Literature course. That will expose you to the various types of children's book and give you clues as to why they are popular.

Different books are popular for different ages. With the pre-school crowd, they like books with lots of repetition and bright colors and rhyming words. By kindergarten, they are looking for a little bit of a plot. By second grade, they are moving into chapter books.

I suggest you look at BLUE SEA by Kaban and FOX IN SOX for preschoolers. BLUE SEA allows children to participate in the story by yelling OUCH! and waving goodbye. Preschoolers never tire of it.

I personally like Dr Seuss after getting my tongue out the square knot Green eggs and Ham tied it into.. . Thru personal experience being a father of three. One now eight and the other two are four. They liked simple books and art in the books mostly about animals like Bear Day and the classic My Leaping Bunny, Now their a little older The demand from my little ones are Beatrice Potters tale of Peter Rabbit and friends and for my older one its more informative books like The Magic School Bus or stories about nature.

Ihave a 8 years old daughter, she does love books like Junie B. Jones, Charlotte's web, and Ramona Quimby... She prefer book with "real" character instead of the one with animals or fake people (cartoons).

Kids like books that repeat the same line over and over again. They also love things that are silly to us adults. They really love books with stories that they could see themselves as being that character.

Since you are asking about relatively young children, I have never known a child who did not absolutely adore Dr. Suess. Are the characters in his books human? or animals? or what? your guess is as good as mine. But they are wonderful.
