Since I was there, and I in fact was 8--15 years of age from 1949--1956, I saw the first half of the decade as well as the second. They were completely different periods.Rock and roll only was introduced in late 1954, early 1955; the movies began to go downhill after 1955 fall trying to compete with much inferior but free TV. There were hardly any live TV dramas after 1955 either, and competition with free TV, a narcotic with storylines, killed much more artistic and memorable radio as a medium. So the weaknesses in the country were the same ones as now only less so--stupid teenagers, dictatorial government, nonfictional information (news, books) badly presented, failed foreign policy, botched collectivist philosophy, pollution by corporations, too many taxes, chain restaurants serving fast food, no books of fiction with ideas and bad actors messing up starring parts in films. Only everything was 70% better than it is now.

From a midwesterner having lived through the '50s, I'd say American society was maddingly provincial, but delightfully innocent. Union, business, and political bosses had too much power with not enough accountability. Compared to today, our access to current events was minimal, and we lived in an artificial world painted by a weak news media.

Women were treated as servants in their homes.
Those who were employed received far less than men who did the same job. Single women were considered "spinsters" (bad). Single men were considered bachelors (good).
