The Mayan Indians regard their beliefs as both a science and a religion. Their discoveries are not done in a lab but rather by tapping into the cosmos via the mind. Through the extensive use of meditation, they are able to discover and track planetary movements as well as space anomalies such as black holes. They used this information to construct a calendar so accurate that no present day calendar can rival its accuracy. They also use this information to predict future events.

According to some Mayans, this date marks the end of the long count of their calendar; Set to end on a winter solstice (12-21-12). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned , in the Milky Way, ninety degrees relative to the black hole, at its center. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,800 years. We exit the age of Pisces and enter the age of Aquarius.

In this position, unusually violent sun spot activity will cause a pole shift. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods will run ramped. Significant loss of life will occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. In this state of higher consciousness, we will recognize that all matter, plant, animal, mineral are bound as one. This realization will mark the end of wars for a time. People will be able to connect to the essence of god (vibrating energy) like only the most enlightened can. We will have exited the forth dimension and entered the fifth dimension.

The date marks a goal to be reached. Evil forces will make every effort to keep humanity from reaching the date. These evil forces are those entrenched in the third dimension, in the Material world. They have no desire to leave this age and wish to continue exploiting and endangering all life for material gain.

Wars just prior to this date could be most devastating, with a loss of as much as 2/3 of our population anticipated. The resulting man made environmental damage could make life inhospitable for those who survive.

Humans have freewill, Man's future is not set yet, nor predictable:
STRIVE FOR PEACE

The magnetic poles are already switching. This is a process that takes time. Probably counted in hundreds of years.

It is not a direct switch as in "north becomes south and vice versa"

It is rather a slow migration of the spot, on Earth's surface, where the lines of field are vertical. The north pole could split. This has already occurred for the south pole where there is more than one location where the lines of field are vertical. The north pole(s) would slowly move towards the equator and finally towards the South portion of Earth. The south magnetic pole(s) would slowly move northward.

This is not the first time that the Earth's magnetic field flips. Normally there are a few hundred thousand years between each flip. This one is overdue.

When I looked into this back in the late 70's, I wrote that the switch might be completed by the end of the 24th century (23-hundred-and-something) based on the work of others, more expert than I will ever be. However, it does appear, right now, to be going a bit faster than what we had thought back then. But 2012 might be too soon.

There is a simulation of how the magnetic field could behave during the flip (national geographic link below)

The Sun's magnetic field flips every eleven years or so.

The field may weaken but it will not disappear. Therefore, we'll still get some protection from cosmic rays. The rays are trapped by the magnetic field and form the Van Allen radiation belts. When the charged particles spill over and fall through the upper levels of the atmosphere, we get aurorae -- northern (and southern) lights.

Solar flares, good gushers of charged particles and magnetic storms, sometimes overload the Earth's field (indirectly) and could cause power failures and communication problems. There may be more instances of that as the Earth's field continues to weaken.

The fact that we have networked power systems may hinder us: a power failure (1989) caused by a solar induced magnetic storm cut power to the entire province of Quebec, in Canada. It had overloaded the main power line from James Bay. The power line, measuring hundreds of miles, acted like a giant antenna, capturing a lot of energy from the magnetic storm.

Earth's magnetic field has little to do (i.e., nothing) with lightbulbs and clocks.

Magnetic compasses are oriented by the horizontal component of the field wherever you happen to be. As the field weakens, the local field might not even point to the magnetic pole which, itself, will be wandering towards the equator, on its way to the south. So, at some point, you could have a compass that points West!

The Mayan calendar is silent about Earth's magnetic field. The long count is 1/5 of Earth's precession period (5125.36 years) and its end date is based on the position of the Sun at winter solstice (hence the importance of 2012 as a base line for the calendar). If we go back 5 long counts (at which time there were no Mayans), the Sun was in the same relative position at winter solstice as it will be in 2012.

However, in the meantime, nothing special happened to Earth's magnetic field at the end of each long count. You'd have to go back over 150 long counts for the last magnetic flip.

Dec.21, 2012 is the Mayan equivalent to our Y2k. Remember on January 1, 2000 when all the computers blew up and we all died?

While I don't usually put a lot of stock into Mayan predictions, the geologic record shows that such a scenario has happened many times before.

Technology would certainly be effected,... Compasses would point south, and God only knows what would happen to satelites and anything dependant on radiomagnetic emissions and reception. Cosmic radiation would certainly have an effect, but we don't even know how long it would take for such a change to take place. Radiation effects are largely a function of exposure time. Are we talking instantaneous, or gradual change over months or years?

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any good working theories about why this phenomenon happens. It is generally accepted that our magnetic field is a result of the earth's rotation affecting the movement of the molten iron of the earth's core, but we know so little about the core's movement that a prediction of polarity reversal would not be feasible.

The mayans accomplished a lot of good science in basically the same way as we do, good observation and record keeping. Without measurable data about the earth's core, they'd be as lost as we are. So, if they made such a prediction, it's probably wrong.

Not much would actually happen. Earth's magnetic poles have switched thouands of times since the earth was created. Although scientists are still unsure why his happenes, evidence can be found at diverging boundaries in the ocean where new rock is created. The alignment of the mineral grains in the rock is drawn to a certian pole indicating the polarity of the earth at the time.

if you dont know what a divergent boundary is, it is where to of earth's plates seperate.

First all the compasses would stop pointing north.
Secondly all the light bulbs that were on would blow out.
Thirdly all the computer clocks would start counting backwards.
Fourthly all the radio stations would stop and restart.
