An overdrive is really just a gear that reduces input rpm, or increases output RPM. In other words, some gears have a reduction effect(i.e. 3:1 - the engine turns 3 times for every 1 turn of the transmission output shaft). Sometimes it's a direct (1:1) relationship, sometimes it's an overdrive relationship (1:1.5).
Your 6 speed (and mine) has 3 reduction gears, 1 direct gear, and 2 overdrive gears.

Oh Okay....so you have a late model firebird. And it has a transmission with 6 forward speeds. It's not a 6-speed transmission as many people think.
It's a 4 speed transmission with two overdrive gears.
This car was built with a 4 speed close ratio transmission so that is would be good for stop light to stop-light racing and true to the pontiac firebird racing image. The overdrive gears (which have a much wider ratio spread) are so that the car drive fuel efficiently on the highway, and avoid nasty things like the GAS guzzler tax. The car is really tame (lacking acceleration) in these two gears because of the ratio, but mine only spins about 1400 rpms going down the freeway at 65. I think the rear-end in mine is a 3.42 posi, but I would have to look to be sure. It's been a while.

It means you can have a higher top speed with a lower engine RPM.
It means your car will be more energy efficient.
It means you have 6 total gear ratios in your transmission.
It means that if you ever blow that baby up, you're looking at about a $3000 rebuild.
It means that you'll have to use the clutch more often, if it's a manual shift car.
etc.

Overdrive on any transmission means that while in that gear, the output shaft is spinning faster than the input shaft.

it merely potential at this equipment six the equipment shaft strikes swifter than the unique engine velocity and as a result the vehicle strikes at a velocity very close to to its optimum velocity and conserves gasoline

Basically its a more fuel efficient way of driving down the highway, lowers rpm's.
