The lower octane will clog your fuel system and gunk up the pistons and rings. The knocking in the motor could be a rod tapping. You need to go to a shop and have your lifters checked. If you send a rod through the motor, you're screwed... LOL Personal experience. Or the knocking could be because a ring is about to blow because of the gunk from the low octane fuel.

Detonation refers to a type of abnormal combustion that is usually preceded by pre-ignition. It is most often caused by a hot spot formed in the combustion chamber. As air and fuel is drawn into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke, this hot spot will "pre-ignite" the air fuel mixture without any spark from the spark plugs.

Detonation exerts a great deal of downward force on the pistons as they are being forced upward by the mechanical action of the connecting rods. When this occurs, the resulting concussion, shock waves and heat can be severe...spark plug tips can be broken, or melted, and other internal engine components such as the pistons or connecting rods themselves can be damaged.

Left unresolved, engine damage is almost certain to occur, with the spark plug usually suffering the first signs of damage.

Remember, when you observe signs of detonation or pre-ignition by examining the spark plugs' firing tip, you are observing a symptom of another problem.

The problem is comming from the lack of octaen in the fuel you are using, you need to use the right fuel for the car, its in the manual for a reason, and gas milage is suffering.

86 octane is more corrosice then 91 octane and your going to corrode your engine, the fuel pump won't pump as well, your cylinders may become corroded and you'll accumulate by-pass gasses so your going to get a lot of unburned and burned gasses along with acids, in your crankcase, The spark plugs being changed to a hotter spark/burn is suggested like platinum to keep this from continuing...

you'll get more buildup of "crap" within your engine because the gas isn't exploding as hard as it would at 91 octane. this could lead to a serious problem. don't save a lil' now and pay a lot later.

You will get the pinging which is bad enough, you will get less power, and maybe carbon build up if you do it frequantly

nothing too serious.........the knocking will trigger the knock sensor, which will tell your computer to retard the timing, which you will notice when your engine doesn't respond well.....but you,ll get over that.......won,t you?
