I am a begginer, and I am looking to play diffrent things other than the begginer books. I am taking lessons but reading notes is what I do... and tabs don't look a thing like music notes.

Guitar tabs are a very simple form of music notation. Each line represents a chord ( it will have what chord next to the line ex. E,G..etc) On the lines there are numbers, these are what fret to hold down. Thats pretty much it, it's very simple. The bad thing with tabs is they don't show you timing or rhythm like music notation does. A lot of the good tab sites like Mxtabs.net are being shut down because some artists are complaining that it's a violation of copyright laws.

It's not. TAB is like what "shorthand" to stenographers is to what reading notes is to guitar players. In a measure of guitar tab, the six lines represent the six strings, and the numbers represent fret position, and there is a sorta "V" and another 3 sided box shape (which i can't duplicate on my keyboard) to indicate upstrokes and downstrokes.

Tabs are diagrams of the strings, with the numbers of the frets for each note.
