Most immigrants landed at Ellis Island, where they had to undergo heath screenings to determine if they were sick or not. If they were found healthy, they were let go. If they were found sick, they were either put into quarantine until they were well or they were sent back home.
Those that were let go moved close and into settlement housing (housing provided by the government that was mainly apartments). These houses were very close to the center of the city, where all of the factories were located. Most immigrants spoke very little english, or none at all, and were not able to write or understand basic things. Those immigrants who were lucky enough to find jobs were paid very little for very difficult and dangerous jobs. Those that were not seriously injured were often cheated out of their money, since it was easy for an employer to skim money out of them because they could not understand pay and wages.
They faced extreme discrimination. Many native whites were angry that the immigrants were flooding their cities and taking their jobs. The Chinese were actually, for a time, banned from immigrating to the US because of the vast numbers who had come over and made the money, sent it back home, and then left themselves. Many immigrants were used as scapegoats for crimes they did not commit, and police and judges did not treat them fairly because they were not native to america.

hope this helped!
