The kinetic theory states that gases expand to fill their containers because the particles are in such rapid motion that the collisions with the sides of the container are so hard that the particles keeps ricocheting back and forth.
If the gas particles are in rapid motion and expanding outward, the dog will just follow the strongest scent to find the point from which the gas particle are emitted.
We all give off odors - even if we can't smell them. Dogs can smell about 6000 times better than humans so they know the difference between the scents of different people.
The scent particles are gases and will expand to spread out away from you. You also leave them on the items you have touched.
