Each cylinder fires after the piston has completed it's cycle, there are four cycles the pistons go through Intake, Compression, Power and then Exhaust... The firing order is ofcourse determined by the camshaft so to find that out you'll need to get the first cylinder to top dead center... But it's usually common that a V8 would have all sorts of different firing orders...

It's a sequence of the order in which the spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture.
A firing order keeps an engine balanced. ie: A firing order of a Chevrolet engine, 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, spreads the piston sequence allowing for a balanced engine

There are many different firing orders for V8 gas engines. Depends on the make and what it says in the repair manual for that specific engine.

what do you mean how does it work? it's the order in which the cylinders fire. it can't be 1-8 because the engine wouldn't run smoothly.
