9/11 The Filmmakers' Commemorative Edition. It started off being a documentary on a rookie New York firefighter, but turned into some of the most amazing footage of 9/11 from 'ground zero' and in one of the towers as the other collapses. It is powerful stuff. I definitely recommend it. Not sure how easy it would be to rent, but you can get it online from amazon.com.

Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids
Murderball (no one mentioned it, but truly gripping, gritty, and amazing)
March of the Penguins
The Aristocrats
Chernobyl Heart (heartbreaking look a the children and families affected by the Chernobyl incident)
I could keep going, but a lot of them are already listed. Hope you find some good ones to watch!

Victory at sea was a good series. Also try The battle for China or The Rape of Nanking both about the Japanese invasion and treatment of the Chinese citizens. World War 1 in color was also very good series because it humanized this war.

good question- some documentaries i like- "Grey Gardens" (very interesting movie about a mother and daughter who are both grown, rather strange/nuts and living in a house which is falling apart), "The realms of the unreal"- very interesting doc. about a recluse artist that no one really knew and the discovery of his strange creations after his death, I love A&E docs on serial killers and strange happenings, and I can't think of anymore-but I probibly will later.

La Cosa Nostra, and the rise and fall of Pablo Escobal.La cosa nostra is an Italian word "meaning our thing or thing thing of ours.It talks about the formation about the the mafia and they're traditions, and how they've survived for centuries,as a secret criminal organization in America, and the place of birth of the mafia,Sicily. The rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, was about a Colombian man of mixed race descent, who came from nothing, and ended up becoming the biggest and deadliest drug king pin in the world.Nobody could stop him,he did what he wanted, and he paid off government officials that tried to investigate him.Pablo had a code and his formula to stay in power longer was simple,he gave an offer led (death by guns) or silver(millions and millions of dollars)just to make you get lost. The American government in 1992 finally caught the head hancho(Pablo) and assassinated him in his mansion. His drugs was messing up American streets, and the U.S government had to stop this mulatto(mixed European and African descent) pig.
