How many weeks pregnant do you have to be for the baby's heartbeat to be seen on both a regular ultrasound and a vaginal ultrasound? Is there a timeline difference depending on the type of ultrasound?

Also this is my 1st prenancy and I am under the age of 30. I am approx 7 wks (according to dr) pregnant and am bleeding lightly about every other day...is my risk of miscarriage high? Or could there be another cause. Have been to my ob/gyn and they are not sure why I am bleeding...I am waiting on blood test results.

Did see the amniotic sac and what the doctor thought was the baby? But could not get a reading on the heart?

CAN ANYONE PROFESSIONALLY GIVE ME BETTER ANSWER THAN WHAT MY DR DID?

My husband and I are quite concerned!! THANKS

I had both types of ultrasound done....that is why I am asking about them, because the doctor said he could not find a heartbeat and that it concerned him!!!! My sister thought it was too early to find a heartbeat by any means of ultrasound.

Each case is difefrent . I have seen fetal poles with heart motion as early as 5 weeks vaginally , and in other cases it's well ovr 6 weeks before I can even identify the fetal pole at all. There are different factors that effect imaging . Uterine position and size: retrovrted ut's are harder to image , as are larger ones because the vag proble is high resolution which means that penetration is limited ( due simply to the actual physics of sound waves),s the farther away the gestational sac is , the harder to see. Also , body habitus plays a role....is the patient heavier or is she thin?? Ultrasound cant see through bowel , so if you had gassy foods for dinner that could possibly even play a role. The most common reason for not seeing a heart rate early , aside from miscarriage is simply that the patient is not quite as far along as she thinks . not every woman ovulates on days 13 thru 15, some go earlier , and some later .....being off by as little as 5 days to a week makes a HUGE difference sonograhically! :-)

As for the bleeding ,many woman have bleeding early on ....sometimes its old blood , sometimes it's new blood from capillaries leaking as the placenta grows , and sometimes its a bleed in the uterus around or near the sac . Sometimes these bleeds , called subchorionic hemmorge, can cause complications; other times they repair and resolve themselves over time .

Your Doc wants what is best for you and your baby. Follow any instructions they gave you , and do your best not to worry. I know it's an emotional ,scary thing ,but if you focus on the good the bad will seem less so.

good luck.

Not a doc but went to nursing school and have been through it. The soonest to see the heartbeat on the ultrasound is 6 weeks. Light bleeding...there is a 50% chance you are miscarrying. And most the time unless your cervix is open and the heart is not beating, doctor can't tell either. Some people still have periods there whole pregnancy. Some women bleed there whole first trimester. Now most people have cramps when they are miscarrying? Have you had any? And yes you can see the sac and the baby at 7 weeks. Either way you should go to the doc. I would go to the ER and most likely they will do an ultrasound. With the blood results they have to keep test the blood 2 or 3 times to be sure something is wrong so your best bet is to get to the hospital.

Its really to early to get a heart beat with my daughter I was about 10 weeks when we heard her heartbeat for the first time with a vaginal ultrasound. As for the bleeding if you are worried of a threatened miscariage "what some doctors call it if they dont know what is causing the bleeding" then talk to your doctor. The blood work you are waiting on may be your hcg levels if they come back normal and you have no cramping then try not to worry. Take it easy and dont do anything that may cause you to strain your self... Best of Luck
