Truth be told, we lived quite nicely without cell phones! People didn't force their phone conversations on others while in public .. you didn't have to worry about ringing phones at the movies or the theatre .. and, people didn't interrupt meetings, etc. by saying, "Excuse me, I have to take this call." I think people were a lot more polite!

I used email a lot more before cell phone. I never knew anyone with a pager though.
And it was nicer bc it seems like people were more likely to be on time. Now everyone just calls to say they are running late instead of being on time.

You'd have to try and call someone just before you left the house to let them know what time you were going to arrive. And if someone was late, it was the biggest pain! you'd be waiting around at a McDonald's or train station or public fountain for like 1/2 hour. It sucked. So you would have to carry books and walkmans and extra batteries around in case someone was late and you were waiting. And trying to call their house from a payphone to see what time they left. And then you ended friendships with late people.
We just did a lot less in every day because we couldn't catch up with people incidentally when we were in their area.

Remember walking up to the phone booth and yelling at the guy to hurry up, lol.

PAY PHONES!!! Although the only pay phones around now are sleezy ones that are "outgoing calls only" to avoid drug deals. Ahh, those were the times, mosit, oily pay phone recievers!
