Chicago is awesome.

Shopping, there are a lot of little boutiques that have inexpensive stuff that is really cool and totally funky. There are also huge stores all over, ones you can't miss. If you have a daughter, go to the American Girl Doll Place, which has such cute little outfits for girls.

You've got to go to the John Hancock. There are views of all Chicago from up on the very top. There is also a little restaurant kind of thing that has the best cheesecake up there.

As for museums, the Art Institute of Chicago is worth checking out if you like art. Even if you don't, this place is super interesting. The Field Museum is great. It has a lot of interactive exhibits and if you're going to Chicago you must go. Also, the Shedd Aquarium is cool, but if you have to choose between Field and Shedd, go to Field. The Museum of Science and Industry is awesome, and even if you're not into Science it's really cool.

A park that you MUST go to is Millennium Park. It's an award-winning center for art, music, architecture, and landscape. Tons of famous artists have don things there. It's more than just an average park.

This sums up what I'd recommend you see for about a four day trip. Hope it helps!

If you want a nice expensive romantic dinner check out the top story of the hancock building.
at navy pier they have lunch/dinner cruises and boat cruises.

Museums
I like the shed aquarium and
the museum of science and industry
Planitarium

Shopping:
just walk down Michigan street or State street it has all the shops you want.
or go to the Water Tower Place- a mall with lots of stories.
You can also check out Navy pier for little shops.

You should check out the sears tower to get a good look at the whole city.
There is a spot where you can see the whole chicago skyline and its right inbetween the shedd aquarium and the planitarium (there walking distance from each other) if you want its a really nice picture spot.
They have cool boat arcitectural tours you can check out also.

hope this helps

Like I tell other people, if you're coming in the summer that means there'll be a lot of things going on that haven't even been announced yet. Chicago holds a lot of street fairs in the summer, as well as festivals of music and food in Grant Park. The museums and parks you know about already, or at least everyone will tell you. And you can go to the Chicago Magazine website to find out the best dining options. But wait until get closer to coming here and then check out the Time Out Chicago magazine website. Or pick up a copy of the free Chicago Reader weekly newspaper. Street fairs are the most fun way to see what the city is REALLY like. You can meet REAL Chicago people, not hang with other tourists, hear some great local music and taste great food. And most street fairs are only about $5 to get in. Also the city-sponsored events should be going on, like Blues Fest or something, as well as their weekend "dancing in the park" thing where they have dance lessons with an instructor, then live music for you to try out the new steps. There's also free concerts at Millenium Park, free movies outdoors in Grant Park, as well as other smaller parks around the city. Oh, and bring a bathing suit because the beaches are great. hangout or play volleyball.

Anyway, wait until you get closer to the time you're supposed to arrive to see exactly what's going on. There are new things scheduled all the time that no one know about yet.

As for museums: Fields Museum, Museum of Science & Industry, Art Institute... also Shedds Aquarium and Planetarium are worth checking out. Shopping is really great on Michigan Ave downtown Chicago, but it can get pricey- if you are on a budged I recommend outlet malls, but you have to travel a bit outside of the city. Gurnee Mills, Aurora Premium Outlets and Huntley Outlets have great stores (think BCBG, Kenneth Cole, Nine West, Guess, Ann Taylor, Miss Sixty etc.) As for restaurants there is anything from Italian to French, Mexican, Polish, Middle Eastern and Thai.
