Because it developed due to a group of people who were dissatisfied with the rules of soccer that involved the "no hands" rule. People continued to call it "Futbol" (a.k.a Football) even after changing the rules into a hands on rugby style game. Eventually when it came about in the United States people here continued to call the new hands on game, Football and changed some of the rules in the process to develop our modern day concept of American Football...where as the rest of the world had begun to call it Rugby Football in their countries.
To make a long story short, it's because it was developed by changing the rules to the game of Soccer.
Futbol "Soccer" = the American form of the current day sport Football

wow, it's really hard to believe that american football evolved from association football. in american football you got so many stoppages in play. but in a sense it does make a little sense, take a look at the punter goal posts, they kinda look like the goal posts used for a soccer net, dont you think?
i think that they call american football, football, to emphasize the difference between what Americans play and the Brits play. The Americans wanted to be free to name whatever they wanted. Americans called it football to stick it to the man (Brits) who used football to denote a foot-oriented game.
Either that or the Americans are into cute oxymoronic names. e.g. "little John" a giant of a man who was part of Robin Hood's men.

The key parts of the game...kick off and punting are foot related...They are why we call it Football. You use your feet throughout the game as well...ie footwork.
