Personally, I would get a PC. I don't have a personal vendetta against Macs, I just prefer PCs. To me, they are much more versatile and upgradeable and easier to use. When a Mac breaks, who can fix it? Not many. And when it gets older and you want to add more memory to it, can you do it? Nope. And yes, you can run Windows on a Mac, but don't expect the same performance you'd get from a PC.
I'd recommend a Dell XPS m1210
There are many great laptops out there that can do what you need.

It largely depends. Honestly, either will do you perfectly as long as you have a large hard drive. Personally, if you're aiming for solid performance under $1,500 I suggest going with a PC. They're just cheaper all around.
Buying a Mac and then installing Windows on it is like buying a Ferrari and then replacing the engine with something you took out of an SUV. No point in it. You can get Sleek from Sony with their Vaio line, although I won't buy from them since their root-kit fiasco.
PC is probably the most solid choice, get a large hard drive, windows vista and 4 GB of ram to really hit Vista's sweet spot. You'll be running Aero and that's about as sleek as windows gets.
Edit:
If security is a concern for you, Windows is perfectly secure if you follow reasonable browsing/downloading habits, keep a good strong antivirus updated (I like Kaspersky) and scan for spyware regularly, in addition to a decent firewall.

I have a Mac and I'm happy with it. The nice thing is that it makes all a lot easier (I've always worked with PC, and still work at my job).
You can run Windows on Mac, using the Virtual PC program, but it will take all the hard disk space of Windows also, as well as some extra memory when you're running Windows...
I vote Mac

Just bought a macbook last week. It's very nice for for all of that. Although, I bought the student version of Mac Office and it's a little different. If you're a student, you can get 100 bucks off, either find the educational discount link, or call them.
If you go with a PC, find one with Windows XP, Vista is a train wreck, which is part of the reason I bought a Mac.
The hard drive is 80GB, not huge, but you can get a external HD for not too much.
For the money, the Mac is solid, but it requires a little getting used to...

Most Macs don't run under 1500 unfortunately :[
Mac runs with different programs, like QuarkXpress (Mac's version of Microsoft Word) so unless you're willing to learn a whole new set of programs I would stick with Microsoft.
Macs are looked down upon because most people think you can't run Windows programs, which is untrue. That's why Adobe was created! You can still send your Microsoft documents to someone with a MAC and vice versa.
Mac gives you Photoshop and other editing software with the computer; with PC you have to buy it separately, and it's costly.
Mac is better because you can't get viruses (YAY!) but most people have been taught to use PCs.
It's basically personal preference. You're forking out more money to get more programs and a more reliable computer with Mac. They tend to have more memory too.
If you don't know the programs in Mac you're kinda up a creek without a paddle, unless you are willing to learn the programs (and I promise it's not hard!)
Hope this helped :]

Well, Macs are better systems. They are more secure and reliable. I think they are nice however I own a pc because I prefer windows and microsoft office.
You can run office on a mac however, I hate mac's mouse. I need a mouse with two buttons and the rolley thing in the middle. I like to right click stuff. The mac mouse only has one button. A mouse doesn't matter for a laptop though.

MAc is the the trend today with young kids, but I do not like anything from MAC. I prefare PC's, because veryone out there including busniess uses PC software and not MAC unless you are in designworkplace or advertising or arts.
PC are good because all software is compatible. MAC programs are not compatible, and evrything is backworse.
Sonce you are trying to get a laptop, ,y suggestion to you is to get a toshiba, they are the best in laptop, and I gurantee that if you compare the MAC laptop to the toshiba one with the same specifications, your toshiba will be more cheaper than what you will be paying for your MAC.

Your best bet is pc.
Macs are a better bang for your buck, thats true. They last a lot longer, are often way easier to upgrade, and run faster and work generally better.
But, finding someone whom can perform repairs is another story. A broken Mac usually stays a broken Mac because the warranty's are short and there is just nobody there to repair it. Even in large cities, this is something that is increasingly difficult to find.
Software and hardware for pc's are much cheaper and available on a larger scale.
