is there any way to set up a any kind of remote connection with my desktop as the host and my laptop as the client. the desktop is on a hard line with a static IP. the laptop is on woreless with a varying IP. i don;t have access to the router settings. i am looking for either a remote desktop with a GUI or a simple FTP. either would work. its just so that i can get files on th ego.

I hvae tried many different ways of connecting them, and they have all met with defeat. the only way i have had any success was with a bluetooth connection, but that is not good for a premanent solution.

Thanks all

if you have a thumb drive, use portable aps via the portableapps website.many tools to chose from.it runs from your thumb drive so the only thing your school network admin sees is port 8080.
you owe me bigtime my friend.
after downloading the apps to your thumb drive you open each program and save to your thum drive.that becomes the portable hard drive-in retrospect.any pc you plug the thumb drive into becomes your pc.the local pc doesnt have to see or do anything.use each one of the apps and get used to them.u will see why tey are each important.
good luck
this better get me many thumbs up

The first thing to do is to make sure the no software is interfering with what you're trying to do.

Firewall - Sometimes deny traffic so adjust to specific needs
(window xp OS has a firewall)
Router - If you have a router look at the configurations to ensure no conflicts

If you're on the same network you might be able to telnet or ftp

Start > Run > cmd > telnet or ftp: (IP address)
telnet : you might have to learn some commands

If you're having problems check out PC Anywhere and RealVNC

About the only way this would work is if the School's System Admin. allowed port forwarding at the router. I am sure that would be a cold day in you know where before that happens.
Go to school - play by rules - get a job!!

Unless you have access to the routers firewall settings then there is no way for you to setup the connection. The reason why your bluetooth connection worked is because it does not go through the router.
