We have changed the plugs and wires, it started, then quit when it dropped below 3500 rpm. We dried off the spark plugs and it started again, and did the same thing.

Check your fuel censors. I have no clue what that means, but my hubby is an amateur mechanic and thats what he says to do.

so it will not idle at less than 3500 rpm?

I'd start chasing an air leak, either a vacuum leak or a metered-air leak (between the MAF sensor and the throttle body.)

I had a similar problem on my stanza. At first, thought it was MAF. I had always had a bit of a wacko idle, but it never hesitated or ran bad. Suddenly it began to want to kill out on acceleration from a complete stop. Two things I found, not sure exactly which was it... replaced TPS (car idles like a champ now) and found a cracked vacuum hose on the bottom side of the air intake tube. Maf is fine.. never replaced it (but did buy a used one to be put in later) and car takes off and run great now. I did also replace the CTS but do not think that was the problem. I also cleaned out the throttle body (made for better power on take off too). I had no codes either... it was intermittent and could not be duplicated no matter how hard I tried, but it started to happen more often (every time I drove it and usually after it warmed up). I bought the TPS from carquest for about $24...
Good luck!!!

It could be the temperature sensor, crankshaft sensor, or even the ecu, you will need to read the trouble codes in the ecu ,auto zone will do it for free, but your cars' problem is definitely computer related !!!!!!!!!!!!!
note: you can spend an huge amount of money doing that guess thing, get it checked by a pro !!!!!!!! you will be glad you did !!!!

the excellent subject to do is flow to yur mechanic and characteristic them do a diagnostics on the motor vehicle. which will take out each and all of the guess artwork and keep you on aspects that dont definitely could be replaced. with the aid of your description, it must be an alternator or distributor or maybe some thing else. solid luck!

If it's fuel injected then it sounds like your ecu is bad and is telling them to put more gas in then it should. If it is throttle body injected then your carbeurator could be bad but can probably be repaired.

It's hard to diagnose long distance, but I suspect that your air mass sensor is on the blink.
