For it.

I'm Republican, but I am against it. It's not because that I feel sorry for the murderer, but I am all about results. And the states that have the highest capital punishment rates consistently have them from year to year. If capital punishment served as a deterrent, then that statistic would change from state to state. But it doesn't. It doesn't even save the taxpayers money after all the appeals and cost of incarceration are factored in. Basically, if some lunatic murders a bunch of people, it's best just to lock them up and throw away the key.

Your answers already indicate that some Republicans oppose the death penalty. Some oppose it for moral and religious reasons and some because it is flawed and is not an effective way to control crime and keep us safe.

More and more Americans are finding out that the death penalty is not a deterrent (states that have the death penalty have higher murder rates than those without the death penalty.) Note to some of the people who answered- deterrence means that others will not commit a crime that someone has been punished for, incapacitation means that the criminal will not be able to commit the same crime again.

48 states now have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is sure and swift and it is not a picnic to be locked up forever. Life withour parole incapacitates a criminal at a fraction of the cost of the death penalty.

Americans of all parties are disturbed at the growing number (over 120) of people released from death row with evidence of their innocence. We don't want to risk executing innocent people.

The death penalty is also very hard on the families of murder victims.

A Gallup poll in 2006 found that more Americans prefer life without parole over the death penalty. (47% to 46%) Seems that we are learning more about this issue.

I believe that most republicans are for capital punishment..a lot of them seem to be for 'personal responsibility' or so it seems anyway. That was the main reason I switched to the Republican party years ago. However, I'm not 100% that is correct, but that's the stance they are supposed to have. Liberals (most democrats) seem to be more about forgiveness and understanding, but sometimes it seems like they take it a bit too far.

I doubt that there is a consensus on capital punishment among Republicans. The large number of errors made by our judicial system as proven by DNA makes me think most people would be reticent to advocate it.

I wouldn't technically consider myself a republican, I prefer to vote for the most qualified regardless of party. But I do lean conservative.
I would say that I'm personally against capital punishment because it fails to deter crime, it shows weakness in social justice, and I believe that it has the potential to bring death to innocent men.

I can't speak for other Republicans , but as for me - I think it's wrong . It has nothing to do with whether I'm a Republican or not-but I am proud to be one .At the same time I can think for myself .
Heinous criminals should get hard labor for the rest of their days and never get out of prison .
That's just my own personal opinion .

As long as THEY don`t know someone that has received capital punishment I think they would be for it.

I am a conservative rather than a party line Republican. I do not support the death penalty, except in the most egregious circumstances, such as Hitler and his thugs.

Down here in the land called Texas, where GWBush was governor twice, and I voted for him twice, I guess I'd have to say I'm plenty FOR it. God Bless you.

If the felon kills Hilary, then we're against it.

And, we're not typically in favor of unborn babies being killed either.
