It should be no problem. It is safer than in America. In America you could get shot by a car jacker. You would not get shot in the Philippines. If you stay out of the bad parts of town, late at night you should be fine. I would recommend buying the Lonely Planet Guide on the Philippines. It has extreme detail on all parts of the country. Their web site has much less information. I have been there three times with no problems. Mactan Island off of Cebu is nice. The Shangri - La resort is nice but expensive. Boracay is supposed to be the best place to visit for white sand beaches.

It is SAFE to travel to the Philippines. All countries in the world have 'troubled' areas... but as long as you ask locals which place is safe and not, you'll be ok.

If you like beaches, you should go to Boracay. With its white sand and crystal clear waters, international tourists have dubbed it one of the best beaches in the world.

For extreme nature-tripping, you can go to Palawan... lush rainforests... pristine beaches... scuba diving.

You like surfing? You should go to Siargao.

Subic has the only tiger safari in the Philippines. You can also find the Ocean Adventure dolphin show here. There's also a huge butterfly garden.

Don't forget to try local dishes like chicken and pork adobo, lechon, Bicol express, and sisig.

I'm sure you'll have so much fun in the Philippines. Another plus factor is that EVERYONE speaks English. Don't worry about being alone. Filipinos are friendly. I'm sure you'll find a companion somewhere along the way.

Enjoy!

it's better and safer than where you are right now. i mean there are also security problems there in your place . those that you hear or see from the news or the media are sometimes exaggerated, go and see for your self. but we assure you you'll be safe just make some necessary precautions such as those mentioned by one answerer - minimize the use of jewelry, don't show your cash in public (this normally applies in the cities but in the provinces, you're safe)

it would be an enlightening experience for you.

Ignore the crazy stories people are talking about, it's not that bad. They've got great beaches, clubs, the foods awesome, and it's just a great place, if you're in the right area. so if you go, then you need to look up a good place there, just to be safe. :)

It's okay. You just buy a map. Or have a travel agency shcedule things for you. There are soo many gorgeous sights here in our country and there will be no problem in communicating with citizens here cause almost all can speak English.

I've been to 70 countries, this is the safest, friendliest place I've found, that's why I've lived here for the last 15 years!! I'm a retired Englishman.

It is a safe as anywhere else in the world and probably a lot more safer than many parts of the U.S.
Some tips:
don't wear excessive jewellery,
don't carry large amounts of cash,
always be aware of your surroundings,
at night keep to well lit areas,
don't trust completely over friendly strangers.

The Philippines is great! Come - you will be welcomed by Filipinos as well as other tourists if you are in touristy spots. Avoid southern Mindanao.
