I get really nervous when I have to speak in front of my class. Sometimes I just stand there and nothing comes out of my mouth, and I've even cried before. In order to get my AA degree, I have to take a public speaking class. I have no idea how I'm going to get through it, just thinking about it makes me queasy. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do or even any medicines I can take to make me less nervous during my speeches?

Here are several methods:
1. Practice in front of groups of friends, talking about whatever, but stand in front of them.
2. Visualize: go through the entire thing in your mind of how it will look, feel, smell, etc. of your being able to deliver a successful speech.
3. Think about how you react when other classmates are in front speaking, they will likely react in a similar way. Most are supportive and empathize realizing that you, like they, don't want to be up there either.
4. Use calming breathing exercises before you go up to give the speech.

Many speech textbooks also have other suggestions. Take a look in your textbook. Good luck.

First of all, get it into your head that you are only going to do this talk in front of some regular people. Not important people, just classmates. No more or less important than you are.

Second, take a fe minutes to calm yourself. Maybe say a little prayer before you get in front of the class.

Make eye contact. Smile. It helps if you have a cute joke or something to break the ice.

If your speech is on a subject that you know well, it will be much easier to do.

Just regular people, remember? No one special. Just your classmates. (And they have to give speeches too.)

Always be prepared. Know your material before you go up to speak, and practice it the night before. Take several deep breathes and exhale slowly. Review what you plan on saying on your way up to the podium. Try to limit caffeine, it will only make you jittery. Talk to some people in the crowd before hand, it will help you to get familiarized with the people and they won't seem so far away. Don't look directly into people's eyes if it makes you nervous while giving a speech. Look just over them. Hope this helps, Good Luck.

First off, your not alone. Public speaking is one of the top phobias in the world. There are not alot of people who "want" to get up there. But the difference here is, you seem to be really suffering. I know what very strong anxiety is like, it can be pure torture, but there is alot you can do about it and if you take the right steps, you might even completely rid yourself of the fear all together. If you dont think you can do it on your own, see a therapist. I doesnt make you crazy, just a person who wants help. It can help, you have to work at it alot, but if you really really try hard you can rid yourself of that anxiety forever. I know because ive done it and believe me, when you relize your begining to with fight with your fears its a beautiful feeling.

maybe u could try imagining that there is no audience and ur all alone...but that's kinda hard i guess...just stare at a wall or someone that ur not shy speaking in front of...practice helps 2...read in front of inatimate objects and try doing it with some friends and family. im not too fond of speaking in front of other either but u just have to remember to have faith in urself...i mean what can they do to you? u know ur lines, u just need some help saying them. just remember: U CAN DO IT!

You could talk to your doctor. In ways i am like that but not that bad. If you don't like the idea of medicine then maybe try going to a counselor? Hope it all works out! =]
