I used to spend my pocket money as a kid on Stones and Pretty Things and Yardbirds records, and I listened to the blues because it was what had influenced MY heroes. Listening to the likes of Willie Dixon and such again, NOW, makes me wonder why my heroes even bothered. Rock and roll didn't just steal the music, the whole attitude was there. Those guys were really from the street, I suppose...

You want to go really old, and assuming you've already listened to Robert Johnson, check out Tommy Johnson, early Son House, early Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson...

The thing about Yardbirds-type rock is not that it's a pale imitation of those guys, it does something quite different. I don't like when people say that the Yardbirds' version of 'I'm A Man' isn't as cool as the Muddy Waters (or whoever) version - it's not trying to be. The Stones, Pretty Things and Yardbirds' music is expressive of being young, white, middle-class and snotty, and only music snobbery - or forgetting what it's like to be a teenager - makes people devalue it. Muddy Waters is a genius, all right, but I hadn't the patience for him when I was 15. Now I appreciate him as being a more towering figure than (say) Keith Relf, but I still like Keith Relf's squeaky voice and Jeff Beck's insane guitar playing on things like 'Rack My Mind'.

Rock is not a copy of the blues. It takes stuff from country, from jazz, from classical music, and it does something new with it. The blues are wonderful, but rock has its moments too. Horses for courses.

John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Billy Holiday. So many great, great singers with such soul. We relax in the evenings by turning out the lights, opening a bottle of good wine and listening to these legendary singers.
