As a child having nightmares, I could lessen their likelyhood by cleansing my mind just before sleep.

I might quietly recount what I had done in the previous day for 10 minutes before getting into bed. Then when closing my eyes, I would think of nothing else but a sunny field with wildflowers and a cool breeze that kept me comfortable.

Worked like a charm.

Relax before bedtime. Meditate, take a hot bath, drink herbal tea or do mild stretching exercises. Clear your mind of worries. Make a list of problems and possible solutions, and then look at them the next day. Avoid watching the evening news, horror movies or movies with graphic violence right before bed. Eat a light snack such as milk or yogurt. Both contain calcium and tryptophan, which can have a relaxing effect. Avoid fatty and spicy foods, which could cause gas and, in turn, nightmares. Stop using any drugs that are not essential to your health and well-being. Write down your nightmare when you wake up in a dream journal. Try to figure out how it relates to your life at present to prevent it from recurring. Keep ur room cold.

Nightmares are caused by a drop in blood sugar during the night. If you constantly have nightmares you may want to see a DR. to check for other signs that might suggest diabetes, or anemic. Like headaches, dizziness etc. For instant relief if you wake up startled drink some OJ. This will raise your blood sugar. also, a small piece of chocolate before you go to bed will slowly release sugar into your system. There are alot of other foods that break down slowly that I can't think of, just google "blood sugar and nightmares". Chocolate works for me.

I know for a fact that when I eat too much, right before bed (especially spicy) I have these insane graphic nightmares in color. I've ahd recurring ones and can actually figure out in my dreams that I am dreaming so then I can control the outcome. There are books you can read that tell you how. It worked for me.
The book is called soul traveler, not sure who the author is.

Go to the bathroom just before you sleep. Studies suggest that nightmares can be caused due to a full bladder. Ever dream about monsters chasing you or u running to find something? It's all coz u wanna go to the bathroom but cant wake up from your sleep..=)
