I'm a skinny 19-year Asian girl in college, and I'm not that great at basketball-- but people playing pick-up look like they're having so much fun. I really want to try it, but I'm scared to approach the big guys (and sometimes big women). Any tips? Thanks.

it would help to bring a friend with you. you can just go over and ask to play. most likely if you do this they will ignore you because you're not that great. don't let that get to you enjoy yourself get better and have fun.

Defense. Offensive can be challenging but you can have a great time and ease your way in through defense. Pass the ball a lot and set picks. Setting a pick is where you run up to an opposing player and place your arms by your side. You create a wall between your teammate and the defender where your teammate can cut to the basket for a shot. You will also get respect by hustling. You do not have to be that good if you show your teammates that you can hustle. Under no circumstances should you shoot the ball your first time. Pass, pass, and pass. Now get out there and be somebody!

Your college or university should have a rec center. I would go down to the rec center and watch a few games see if there is a game of girls or guys playing that you think you could play competitively with and than go ask if there is a list to sign up to play. Also there should be a few intramural teams that you could join and that would be a great way to play, they'll probably have practices that you can attend and get your feet wet. Good Luck!

I play all the time and I suck! Just find the right people to play with... for fun, not competition. If you belong to an athletic club, there is always some "non-competitive" games going on. I play with old fat guys, it makes me look a little better! It's still fun though.

Find some people around your size and skill level and just play with them. If someone invites you to play, just warn them that you're not up for a really competitive game. Either they'll respect that and play with you or find someone else. If you can find just one other person you enjoy playing with, you've at least got a game of one-on-one.
Good luck!

Don't worry about the height of people. And if you are scared just because your a small person, doesnt mean anything. In the end everyone has had fun.

girl, face your fears and just ask them if you can play. if it helps, bring a friend with you... another girl maybe? this sounds all too familiar to me... because i've been there. none of my girlfriends were even interested in playing ball so i was forced to just play with the guys. even if you arent that great, they (especially the guys) will respect you for having the guts to just play. throw it down mama! show them what you got! =)
