Reef is ok, but it does remind me of Reefer.

How about a name of an exoctic sea creature? Or Nemo or Otto or Niko.

I agree... Reef is just too weird for a first name. I work at a school and the kids with really bizarre names DO suffer. But I do like the idea of something coastal... how about these?
My favorite would be
Dune - but others that might work could be Ocean, Bay, Cliff (a normal name that would have coastal references). Buoy, or as others suggested.. names that have a special meaning to you.. like surf spots.

Or better yet... use your unusual choices as a middle name.

Reef isn't the worst name I've heard, but it's definately different. I think if your son is a surfer and can wear the name it'll be great for him! You know how it is as a teenager, your over the teasing by then.

Having been to San Francisco many times - and love it! I'd say it's a good name. If it's not the name they'll find something else to make fun of...

Well, Reef is surfy all right, and it's not too bad. But since the saying of the name is enough to give the impression you want, why not give it a more normal spelling for a name, like Reif?

I don't know about Reef.. =/
What about...
Hampton- as in Hampton Beach
Dylan- son of the sea
Hurley- sea tide
Marino- of the sea
Nemo-Captain in 20,000 Leagues under the sea and a fish who lost his way.
Seaton- town by the sea
Oneil- the clothing brand
Kai-ocean
Carter/Carver just sounds like a surfer to me.

I like Hampton and Carter. I think those are nice, but it's up to you. Reef isn't horrible. It's just not my style. Good Luck!

And if it's a girl are you going to name her Coral?

Sorry, but I have to agree with the majority on this poll. Reef is ...uh... interesting, but maybe you can think of something a bit more norm... I think that there are tons of way cool names like Lief or Guy... but it's your child, and usually what parents name their kids fits them perfectly.

No way! It is definitely "surfy" but there are too many ways he can be picked on:

Beef, PEEf, Reefer.

Plus he could gain a stigma by just his name.

If you want something surfy - try city's that are famous for their "surf" or beach life - Orlando??? Cisco (San Fran)? Not Reef ... cummon...

Just remember when you name your child that he has to live with it for the rest of his life. Grade school will be enough to scar him with a name like that.

I am not very impressed with the name and it sounds harsh, not a calm or easy going name that I normally associate with the sea.
