It seems like the front differential doesnt ingage. how does the electric mototr on the front diff. get its signal to lock the front diff into four wheel drive(it is a 96 chevy silverado)
is there a switch on the transfer case?

If your front drive train is working then i am guessing that it is all good, the following should get you going

Do you have manual locking hubs or automatic, if manual there is a knob in the centre of the front wheels that says free or lock, to engage 4wd you need to select 4edl or h on your tranfer case and get out and select lock, once you want to go back into 2wd do the oppsite.

If they are automatic locking hubs you may have to reverse a small distance to lock them in

Hope this helps

The front diff actuator gets a signal from the transfer case switch.A blue or brown wire,(memory lacks a bit) Turn your ignition key to run & have a friend shift in & out of 4wheel drive, listen to your front diff actuator. You should hear it engage & disengage. If not chk for power at the diff actuator, while your friend is doing this.Good luck

Rebuilding a pass case is attainable and that i could advise a extra useful scenario than procuring a used one while you're making plans to maintain the explorer long term. The good judgment is this....you will understand that, bearings bushings, seals, etc are in sturdy shape which you will not understand while procuring a used one. This a extra high priced determination and while you're searching for a quick term restoration, inclusive of to sell the motor vehicle, i could check out used, yet i could rigidity you won't be able to tell what shape the innards are in without establishing it up.
