Buses usually come ever 15 minutes or so. Depending on when you are trying to get on, you may have to wait for another bus if you are waiting with a lot of other people. Generally, you can get on pretty quickly and most of the time buses come more often than every 15 minutes.
To get from Downtown Disney to Magic Kingdom, you are only looking at about 15 to 20 minutes, give or take a little depending on the stops and traffic.
If you have your own car, it will be a lot faster to drive. But, the buses are a lot more convenient, they know the backroads and things, which you may or may not be aware of. Also, it is nice not to have to drive. Disney is very big and spreads over miles and miles of land, so getting from one place to the next is not always a quick trip. If you plan on traveling, be sure to allow plenty of time, usually about 45 minutes to wait on the bus and get to your destination. This is one of the reasons I recommend staying in one park for the day, especially on a first visit, so you don't lose so much time in travel.
If you stay at one of the Downtown Disney resorts, you won't actually be using the same buses as the onsite Disney Guests. If you are planning to walk to Downtown Disney to get on the bus there, just be aware that it is a little of a walk and the boat transfer from Downtown Disney go to Saratoga Springs, Port Orleans and Old Key West. Finally, Universal is not owned by Disney, so the Disney buses do not offer a transfer to the Universal Parks, you will need to find your own transportation there, unless your resort offers it.
But I would estimate 30 to 45 minutes total to get from the Magic Kingdom to Downtown Disney, or the other way around, they try to move pretty quickly, so it may not take that long. For a rule of thumb, I would always estimate 30 to 45 minutes for waiting on the bus and the drive to get to where you are going, but it usually doesn't take that long.
Have a great time!

RE:
How long does it take to get from downtown disney to the magic kingdom?
I know there is a ferry or the bus service, but do those take a lot of time? It's hard to tell on the disney map because everything looks soooo far apart. Thanks!

A person driving in their own car will always beat the Disney bus system (which makes stops along the way). Typically, the Disney shuttle service makes it in approximately 25 minutes, with stops. But if you were driving, you could be from DD to MK in 10-15.

I would say 10 minutes travel time because there are so many tiny roads. If you are riding the bus, I don't know how long the waiting time for the bus is..
