body movements that match words in songs are great for all ages, even up to 4th grade. i prefer pop and folk songs to studio recorded kid songs, and i think kids know the difference too. you can teach the kids great popular songs that have positive messages, like "lean on me" or "why can't we be friends." i was surprised that almost all of my third graders know bob marley's "everything's gonna be alright."

the kids at my school LOVE to play a game they call "switch." you need a four square court for this, or you can draw lines with chalk onto the asphalt. four kids stand on the corners of the square. one person stands in the middle. others wait in a line outside of the square. the one in the middle shouts, "SWITCH" or "change corners," and everyone has to run to a new corner, including the one in the middle. the person who is left without a corner goes to the end of the line, and a new person comes to the middle. there's lots of running invilved, and the wait in line is never very long. kids don't mind being "out," because they know they'll be back in again.

musical chairs, the song johnny appleseed, LEAP FROG, hide and seek, HI HO SILVER! that one our neighborhood invented. someone stands on the porch and throws coins onto the lawn and when you say GO, the kids scramble to collect the coins. little kids should be in the front or have a head start. also boxes lined up to be a pretend train. kids can draw windows etc. or get kids in groups and have them make up dances and rate them. i used to like to write things like "tell someone something good about them" or recite a poem, can be anything and put those folded up pieces of paper inside balloons u blow up. the kids have to sit on the balloon and break them and do what it says inside. when kids come for dinner, have a mashed potato sculpture contest. decorate bicycles and ride them in a neighborhood parade. allow the kids to put on a play for the neighbors and sell popcorn and lemonade etc. they can write the play themselves. let the kids make an obsticle course and run and jump over things and tiptoe thru old tires, etc. help them set up a club using parlimentary proceedure, collect minimal dues to do something specific with. we did all this stuff as kids. teach them to jump rope w/3 or more kids and chinese jump rope is alot of fun too (made w/rubber bands). if u know your neighbors, they can have a scavenger hunt. thats always fun. races, kite flying, outdoor rollerskating. make simple foods like cookies etc and deliver to neighbors. if someone has a telescope get it out and show the kids whats up there. simple things. a trip to the local spca where they can play w/the animals and make the animals and them happy. have a pet show and let the kids dress up their animals and let them show their animals tricks. good luck to u :)

Preschool children love familiar songs- especially if you add a twist. "If you're happy and you know it" (clap your hands) can turn into "wiggle your nose", "stand on one foot", "be as quiet as a mouse", etc. My second graders love it still, the sillier the better.

Get a cd from "Dr. Judy" (sorry, I forgot her last name). Her songs are developmentally sound, interactive, have catchy tunes, and are educational. Cool stuff! Good Luck!

Kids really love spelling songs. "There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o", "he B-I-B-L-E", and for vowel sounds, I usually do "Old MacDonald" but instead of doing the e-i-e-i-o, I do the a-e-i-o-u.
