I don't like the idea that "artistas" should be politicians. As an icon, you should stay onscreen. There are so many ways to affect the world without running for office. There's a big lack of activism here, and it doesn't have to mean marching int he streets or going to strike. They can do it on their own way--- through humor or performing onscreen.

It's sad to read answers that justifies the prerogative of artistas to use their fame to get into public office... it's NOT about their rights. It's about their distasteful guts to assume a serious role in our community without knowing the meaning of it. It's not enough that they have "sincerity" to better the lives of their countrymen, they can do that in some other ways, but they should also have an IQ of a sensible law maker. Like what heart-2-exist mentioned, they ought to know how politics works, a knowledge on military tactics and economic policies, among others. By the way, you're too cute to be smart heart-2-exist, hands down to you ^_^ (or down your pants ;) )

In my personal opinion, I think they use their celebrity status to voice their opinions which somewhat is inappropriate. Why do I say that? Because they are not politicians or military strategists, they don't know how the politic works or how the military operation function. I have heard many famous celebrities criticize the government, the president for various reasons, but they, the celebrities can not offer any resourceful solutions to the global warming, economic hardship, war in Iraq. It's easy to play a blame game than being blamed. For example, Michael Moore, he criticized and criticized, but what has he done for this country actually. Nothing exactly. The Dixie Chic band, made some inappropriate comments when they don't even know how the judicial system works. Most people just say anything that they feel it's right without thoroughly think about it, because they know they have a freedom of speech and they can just about anything without penality.

I think its okay just as long as the celebrity is very sincere and really want to make peoples lives better and know what to do when challenging situations arise.

If they have the right motives and good reason for being a politician. It should be just fine.

I think you may be generalizing celebrities, I would have to think that some of them may be relatively intelligent and could use their fame to gain a public office and possibly even make a difference in the world. There are some celebrities who have already used their fame to draw attention to significant issues - like Oprah, Ricky Martin and Angelina Jolie to name a few. I'd vote for Oprah if she ran for public office.

You can't blame them! Our Congress anyway, do not pass laws but act "as if" in front of the cameras. Politicians are good actors. Look at their campaign videos in your tv screen.
You cannot fault our moviescreen celebrities to join their own kind.
It is us, the voters who will decide. Who will look foolish? The voters or the candidates?

In order to win you need to be popular .. how can you earn your votes if no one knows you? The law is not biased in terms of qualifying who are allowed to vote. And our law can't stop actors or actresses to run and no one should since we are a democratic country. Just like the law doesn't state that you should be male or female to run. The point is we can't stop them from using their fame since in fact you need to be known to earn a vote. What is important is the VOTER ! We ,the voters, have the right to choose who should win the elections. It is up to us to choose the rightful candidate. We should base it on their merits and not just because they look good on screen.

When someone becomes an actress, actor, singer, whatever, they do not relinquish their citizenship. Therefore, they have every right to say what they want, run for any office that they want, etc. It is then your right to vote for them or not, buy their music, watch their movie or TV show or not, etc.
