I don't understand why people of Indian descent can judge and say it's wrong for Chief to be around. For one all the Illini Indians are dead and have been for a long time, so it’s other tribes speaking out. The second I don't go around saying that it’s wrong for Native American people to act like white people. So if I were to say Native Americans are dishonoring my white culture and shouldn't live in houses they should go hunt buffalo, people would just call me stupid. But if a school uses a Native American mascot and does a Native American dance then it disgraces and is inappropriate according to Native Americans.

Please educate yourself more about this issue.

First of all the Illini are not dead. There are living descendents of the Illini and they don't support the mascot.

Second Native people were and still are forced to act like white people. Their children were kidnapped and brought to boarding schools so they could be white (by white people) and when they spoke their language they were often beat or had their fingers cut off or their tounge peirced. And they were raped just for being there. This is oppression and it is not something to make light of.

There are many reasons the mascot is dishonorable. What makes you think that your opinion is more important than that of the people who are being hurt? That is white priveledge at its finest!

There's a difference between The University of North Dakota, whose mascot is the fighting Sioux, but who has a 20% Native American student population and who has had amicus briefs filed by the Sioux nation on behalf of their lawsuit against the NCAA, and Illinois, who has no ties or support among any Native American groups.

One is blackface and Amos 'n Andy, the other is the Cotton Club and Mississippi Delta Blues.

You figure out which one is which.

I don't know anything about them, so I can't say if the Illini are still around or not. (Though I've heard other dumb people claim other tribes are gone when they aren't). But how about YOU go tell that to people who do come from the Illini as I'm sure they are out there...

It doesn't even matter WHAT people they claim to impersonate, the style mocks the cultures and the cloths (and adds in bad stereotypes) of the PLAINS people in general!

And yeah, people would call you stupid if you said that, considering how much whites felt it mandatory that Native folks took up the white ways and got rid of their cultures.

Look it this way... If the mascot was in regard to women, you might not care. But if it was in made out to be your mother (assuming you care about her) and was a TERRIBLE mockery of her and just plain wrong, with things added, yeah you'd probably not be happy. And make the one dressed up some man of the wrong ethnicity to acted out stereotypes of how HE thought she'd act and jump around in some stadium.
