It's a Hermans Tortoise I took because the kid who bought it got sick of it. There has been a respiratory infection for a while but now I am not hearing breathing at all, no eyes open, no movement or response to touch. This tortoise was not in hibernation. I placed it under the heat light and now the head is out, but still it responds to nothing. I don't want to throw it out if it is still alive. If it is alive then what is the humane thing to do? If it is not dead it must be almost dead. I am grossed out and depressed by the whole situation.

Thank you all. Yahoo wants me to wait 4hrs before choosing best answer. I checked the 10 signs and triple plastic bagged her right up. My son and I put her in the trash (no burial- ground is frozen, too creepy). Then we said a few non secular words of remembrance, returned home and burned an incense. I appreciate your advice, support (and humor) during this difficult time.

I'm sorry, I had a turtle that died like the first day almost, we got a sick one or something. There's a good chance that it is dying. I had lizards when I was a kid and they died like that, they could still move a little, but they were on their way.
I know how this feels. I had to put out a squirrel that came to die on my porch a few months ago. I laid a big rock on it so that it couldn't raise it's lungs to breathe.
I know you don't want this weighing you down. Be reasonable, it's dying right? Maybe you could tie it up in a few trash bags and leave it in the trash bin and let it suffocate. The tighter you tie it, the better you can feel that it would die in probably less than an hour. Tie him tight, get tough, and do both of yourselves a favor and get it over with.

this same thing is happening right now to me to except it is a null frog. put it in some water and see if it responds to that but dont leave it aline. also, call a vet, just what ever you do, dont throw it away or anything like that, just wait it out and see what happens, i know how you feel, i just asked a similiar question

Turtles are cold-blooded and very slow.... it could just be moving slower at the moment? Try feeding it.....

If none worked, it's time to take it to the vet.

I think he is dead, but you could put a little soapy water on his nose to see if he is breathing.

Well if you lay food out for him and it disappears, then the turtle is alive.
