Comparing the XPS series and the Inspiron series, isnt customizing a Inspiron with good specs better (cheaper) then just buying an XPS with decent specs?

I did the customized laptop feature, and with the 'fairly' same specs, the inspiron was much cheaper?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB)
15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife™
2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ, 2 DIMM
160GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
256MB NVIDIA®GeForce®Go 7300 TurboCache*
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)

They are almost the same except the 15in and 17in (xps) and the 15in is a carbonfiber cover.

Prices: XPS = $2,828 Inspiron $1,692

Almost no difference, paying for the name?

I personally prefer dell notebooks instead of other.

(I'm living in Asia)

Comparing Inspiron and XPS, the main different is the comptuer model ( the dimension )

XPS is a smaller unit compared to inspiron.
Inspiron is much heavier (around 3-4kg) while XPS is just around 2kg.

If you use your laptop for definate mobile (you travels alot) and you got sufficient budget, you may go for XPS.

If you are just having the laptop for DESKTOP replacement and ain't travelling much with your laptop, you may just get inspiron because inspiron is somehow cheaper than the XPS.

On the same spec, the XPS may be more expansive than inspiron.

Dell do provide a Complete Cover scheme ( this website : http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/services/en/completecare_svc?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs ) you can have more info at the website.

Conclusion : If you do not mind the heavy weight of the inspiron , go for it as it is cheaper. go for XPS if you travels alot. other brands like lifebook, vaio , and others are MUCH more expansive compared to dell and is not customizable.

As for what Critter Lady said, I do not quite agree with her because I believe that dell provide really great support (i am dell user too). If any parts of the computer failed within the warrenty period, you can simply call them and they will definately change the part to a new one for you. changing a dvd rom for $1000? that doesn't really make sense.. I was once spoiled my inspiron keyboard by spilting water on it and it failed, and i called to dell and their technician came to my house on the NEXT day and change a new keyboard for me for FREE OF CHARGE. this is included under the Complete Cover Scheme.

Yes, you will save money, but you get what you pay for........

I wouldn't touch a Dell with a 10' pole. Dell is proprietary........if ANYTHING at all goes wrong, you will have to go to them for a replacement part (nothing you get OTC will operate with it). They charge a small fortune, even if it's under warrenty (they charged my Mom in law almost $1000 for replacing her dvd rom......even though she only had her puter for less than one month, and the problem was there when it arrived). They simply claim it's user fault, no matter what the problem is.

Stick with HP or some thing of equal value. Dell (and Gateway) are both horrible.

There has to be a reason, or there is an incredible deal with the current inspiron computers. I am guessing there might be some hidden software package that is standard on the XPS and not included on the Inspiron.

Either way, you can use a coupon from http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html to save on your laptop.

Good Luck.

What is best for you is dependent entirely on your use; if you are using it for gaming, then speed performance, etc takes center stage. If you just want to surf & email, then memory, HDD may be more important.

Your budget also has to be considered.

I'd go for the more powerful laptop if the difference is small; you never know when your usage patterns change and you need the power.
