It's because "nein", pronounced "nine", is the German word for "no."
That implies that the price is NOT what it seems. (especially when you add tax, you will agree with me)

I agree with Papa Smurf Not at Wal Mart. I got a luggage set for $14.88 & an outfit for my daughter for $6.88 Track outfit for my son at $10.86 or something like that. Wally World likes the number 8 better. Hmmmm

They do it so that you think of the lower dollar not the higher one 9.99 not 10.00 your brain will make you think oh thats only 9 bucks...but its really ten!!!!!
