Try dropping a Chevy 350 motor in it. Put high performance headers on it. Run dual exaust, straight pipe if possible (no muffler). On top of that, take it to a machine shop and have it bored out 30,000ths over. You also need a 350cc transmisssion, preferably standard. And you need a B & M shift kit for your tranny. Also a Holley 650 Double Pumper 4 barrel carburator would help. And that should do it.

The cruiser is geared for high speed pursuit and doesn't have the best acceleration at low speeds. Have some 4:11 or 4:56 gears put in your rear axle and use some wider, sticky race tires in the rear. You will get up to speed fast and even with the 305, you will have a chance of beating the 94 Caprice in the 1/8 mile. As posted earlier, being first off the line really helps. Also take out as much weight as possible. No spare tire, no rear seat, just enough gas for the race, etc. The less weight the engine has to move, the faster it will move it. Or, you could just put a 502 big block in place of the 305.

For 1/8 mile racing, the best thing you could do is change rear end gears to the numerically highest ratio available. Factory gearing is a compromise to give good fuel mileage. If you don't care about mileage, go for a 3.70 rear end ratio.
