why are they trying to ban these school mascots all of a sudden now i know for a fact that FSU has permission from the Seminoles to use that name in fact they send there own warrior to the home games. but I'm not sure about Illinois fighting Illini but even if they don't there is nothing degrading about calling these schools doing this in fact honor the tribes

I dont understand either I do not see anything wrong with that. Im Itilian and if a team had a mascot of a man for Italy eating pasta and pizza I would think its pretty funny. And to me if people find it offensive well then thats to damn bad!

It's another round of the political correctness commandos at it again. They can't stand to see someone else enjoying themselves so they need to make everyone else miserable.

I'm part Native American and to be honest I don't give a crap about teams calling themselves the Seminoles, Illini, or whatever. Why? Because I'm not still living in the 1800s. It sucks what our government and the settlers did to my ancestors but it's over and done with and crying about it won't change a damn thing and neither will starting the issue back up.

Some people need to seriously get a life.

this isn't sudden. you must not be very old. in the early 90's and late 80's most college teams ditched the indian names because a big movement BY INDIAN TRIBES went after this. this is old and two of the last schools to bascially say no-were illinois and fsu.

fsu has the rights because the tribe actually likes the fact they are used (in name) by the school. illinois on the other hand actually went out of its way to INSULT and make a fool of the mascot just to spite the tribes who asked them to stop using it.

many of the names were considered racist by the tribes. i'm not indian so i can't speak for them if it is or isn't. but i dont see anything wrong with using some of names. there are some that are insutling i don't always agree with. the redskins was FOR SURE A RACIST one used (that's why you won't find highschools or many if any colleges using them only the pro's)

its just a name i agree. people getting all bent out of shape. but then again you'd be upset if you went to watch a football game and one of the teams was from afghanastan and its name was.

osama's raiders. or osama's american killers.

etc.

It's not all of sudden. The indian tribes involved have been fighting the use of the names for many years. It is just now that they have been winning the cases in court and now the NCAA is also on their side. Like you said the Seminole tribe has given their permission for FSU to use the name. Many tribes have voted and have not given the schools permission. And that is their right. I have many native friends who find not only some of the names very degrading but also the schools have received large economic rewards and the tribes have not shared in any of that.

It's called political correctness. Most Native Americans feel honored that there tribe is a sports mascot. There are a few who are still trying to get more $ for Manhattan Island

Native Americans have been attacking schools like the ones listed above for years. It is said to see when a school folds under the pressure (like Eastern Michigan used to be the Chippewas and now they are the Hurons)

You don't see Cowboys putting up a fuss just because Dallas has a team named after them. Some people need to lighten up.
