Venomous and Poisonous are the same thing. Means the same thing, the snake produces a type of toxic venom. The venom that the snake produces can vary in type (Hemotoxins and Neurotoxins) and severity. Some researches use the word venomous for highly toxic snakes and Poisonous for the more mildly toxic. But the correct wordage associated with snakes is.
Venomous and Non-Venomous
Some of the most deadly venomous snakes are sea snakes

THANKS for the thumbs down, Im aware of the diffrence between poisonous and venomous, its a mistake made by many I didnt realize we were getting into the actual english language meanings of the diffrence. If i know we were to get that specific I would have. Basically a general person that uses the term "posionous" MEANS they are venomous. They KNOW they are Venomous its just a mistake they made when discribing the snake. I did say the CORRECT terminology for snakes is Venomous or Non-Venomous.

wow -never thought this could be a hot debate

poison is something biologically present in an animal (or plant) the the animal may or may not be able to control the administration of. Poison frogs for example have toxins present in their skin and the harm comes from ingesting them or even just touching them depending on their level of toxicity.

Bees by contrast are considered venomous, they directly inject their toxins into the victim/attacker just like snakes.

Spiders are venom carriers. often referred to as poisonous.

I believe the best way to make the distinction between venom and poison is - can they do it on purpose? that's venom

is it put there for defense and it just happens? that's poison.

I think the difference is that a poisonous snake will poison whatever eats it. (it's predators)
A venomous snake will inject a venom when it bites.
Not all the poisonous snakes inject, but the venomous does.
Does this make sense??

There is no such thing as a poisonous snake. Poison is ingested, venom is enzyme based and is injected or absorbed into the bloodstream. You can actually drink snake venom and remain unaffected, unless you have an ulcer that would allow it into the bloodstream.

Here is the often misunderstood difference between venomous and poisonous:something venomous has to actively inject its venom into its target, poison is innate, throughout a plant/animal/fungi/etc.

Snakes and gila monsters are considered venomous for the above reason. The poison arrow frog, for example, is so called because it cannot choose to intoxicate something, it is toxic in and of itself.

most consider snakes venomous because they inject venom, but if you say poisonous snake poeple know what you mean.. so i guess the answer to your question is that they would be the same thing...

Must agree with the few who have it right. Poison kills or makes you sick if you ingest it, venom must be injected for it to work. (but if you put poison in a hypodermic needle, does that make it venom?)

An interesting thing to point out though is that some poisonous animals (poison dart frogs being the main one that pop into mind) actually become poisonous through things they eat. Technically you -can- handle a captive dart frog, it's not suggested because they're tiny and any toxin you have on your hands (bleach, nicotene, etc.) can kill them. But if they're captive born and raised, they're really not poison dart frogs, they're just dart frogs.

Many have said it. Venomous is the injecting of venom. But I guess if you ate snakes and you ate a venomous one you them could consider it posionous because its venom glands you eat would possialbly posion you. But snakes that bite and inject "posion" are just venomous.

Venomous- Describes an animal that injects toxic venom into another animal. Usually with teeth or fangs. Sometimes with spines and spurs.

Poisonous- Means that something is toxic if it is swallowed or absorbed.

I hope this helps.
