why are they trying to ban these school mascots all of a sudden now i know for a fact that FSU has permission from the Seminoles to use that name in fact they send there own warrior to the home games. but I'm not sure about Illinois fighting Illini but even if they don't there is nothing degrading about calling these schools doing this in fact honor the tribes

There have been people trying to get rid of Chief Illiniwek for years and years. Even though there have been several "final rulings" on the issue, the very small but very vocal minority will not leave it alone. Therefore, these few people have destroyed an 80 year tradition for their extremist views. The vast majority of students, alumni and taxpaying residents here are extremely upset and there are boycotts starting against the U of I. I agree that our mascot, if you really want to call him that, was a symbol of great pride for our school. Now what? Will we go to some silly, giant stuffed animal that runs around the stands and does idiotic dances? We had one of the few mascots with great pride and dignity - one who represented the heritage of a state named for the Illini - and a very few people have destroyed that, possibly forever. It is a sad day.

Ever since I was a young boy in the mid-sixties, I have always felt that the names were meant to honor particular tribes or races for their spirit and pride. I have wondered about the Washington Redskins nickname for some time now and need more information on the origin and meaning of the name before I state that it should be changed or not.

I understand that when the team was formed in Boston, there was little racial tolerance or equality. It may indeed be a caucasian slur but I haven't decided for myself. My point is that just because one team might be guilty of using a derogatory nickname, it doesn't say the same for all other teams in the sports world.

The Illini has a white guy dance and dress like an Indian at halftime. Would it be all right if I had a football team called the New York ****** and have a white guy come out at halftime and act like he is an African-American. How bout the Jacksonville Jews. We have to be politically correct to every religion and race but society gives the Native Americans the shaft.

Because people are PC asswipes lately. FSU honors the Seminole Indian by using it as its mascot and the Seminole Indian Reservation is paid mightily for its use and allows FSU to use it.

Fed Govt. should but out.
