I have a few dozen guppies around. They don't really need other guppies like neons need other neons. They are fine as a single specimen in a tank.

Guppies do like to be in schools, just make sure that you have the right ratio of males to females. It should be about 3 females to 1 male. Male guppies are always "ready" and you need more females to spread out the attention.

One note, do not put a betta into a tank with guppies. Bettas can mistake male guppies for other bettas and may go after them.

You need to be careful when putting multiple male guppies with female guppies!!!

The male guppies STRESS out the female guppies and eventually kill them. Also, you'll have the added responsibility of little baby guppies!! It is best to have one male and several females or guppies of only one gender.

The pet store has the guppies separated by sex because they know guppies breed like no body's business. You don't want to end up with a whole mess of guppies, do you?

If your guppies are healthy, you should have more than you know what to do with in a couple months.

Guppies are prolific breeders. The Males are smaller and more colorful. The bad thing is the adults will eat the fry. If you want to keep the babies then you will have to separate them till they are big enough to coexist with the adults.
